All representatives of the First People’s Political Consultative Conference held a solemn foundation stone laying ceremony at Tiananmen Square. Subsequently, a total of 17 central and local units formed the Monument to the Construction of the People's Heroes Monument. The first job was to determine the overall design of the monument. The construction committee spent more than a year and solicited opinions from across the country. It received more than 140 design proposals, including pavilions, tables, halls, and monuments.
On the National Day in 1951, Chen Zhide, who worked in the Beijing Municipal Construction Bureau, was invited to the Tiananmen Square by the staff of the People’s Heroes Monument Construction Committee. Chen Zhide was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1917 and returned to China in 1950 after receiving a master's degree in Civil Engineering from Illinois State University. On the same day, he saw the final selection of three wooden monuments on Tiananmen Square: one is a city table shaped like three openings, with a high monument; one is a monument in the shape of a crest; the other is a sculpture in the shape of a group. monument.
After watching Chen Zhide, he shook his head and said: “Though all three monument models are still okay, they lack the expressiveness of tall, tall, straight, and magnificent.” His opinion was highly valued by the Construction Committee. After the discussion and revision of the construction committee, the design plan similar to the monument we see today was finalized.
Next, the construction committee established the construction team and Chen Zhide was transferred to the team leader. In August 1952, the construction of the Monument to the People’s Heroes was officially launched.
Where is 300 tons of inscription stone to be mined? Chen Zhide met the first "stumbling block"
Chen Zhide carefully studied the drawings, according to the design plan, "the people's heroes are immortal." The eight characters should be engraved on a piece of inscribed stone with a length of about 15 meters, a width of 3 meters and a thickness of about 0.6 meters. In order to ensure that the stele is not broken, the rough thickness of the mined stone must reach 3 meters, which means that this huge rough stone will weigh more than 300 tons. Where to go to mine such a huge rock? Chen Zhide met the first "stumbling block".
Chen Zhide came to the Beijing Library and spent more than ten days reading information and mastered the rock conditions in major mountain ranges throughout the country. He decided to locate the quarry in Shaoshan, Qingdao, Shandong. After rushing to the Laoshan site for investigation overnight, Chen Zhide finally decided to use the stone at the top of Mount Fushan Dajin, the westernmost peak of Sheshan, because of its uniform stone and weather resistance.
In order to completely mine a 300-ton stone blank, more than a dozen skilled workers arrived in Fushan from Nanjing and Shanghai. The technical workers did not have the experience of mining such huge stones. Several of the proposed mining plans were rejected by Chen Zhide. Seeing that time passed, Chen Zhide got angry and got a swift motion from the left corner.
Several of the masonry hired from the locality saw Chen Zhide in a hurry, and quietly pulled him aside and said: “There is a village called Jiao Qing Shi in the village at the foot of Laoshan Mountain. An old masonry worker called Li Kaishan is living in the village. He is called Stone God. You Or ask him to think of a solution!"
Li Kaishan’s stonemason craftsmanship was ancestral. When his grandfather was a stonemason, he helped the Kuomintang government to take several large rocks in Sheshan, and he looked in the eyes during the quarrying process.
Chen Zhide asked Li Kaishan to go to the scene of quarrying. Li Kaishan listened to the request and sucked cool air. A 300-ton-heavy rock was simply not a few rows of steel wedges. He decided to blow out the boulder material with a boring gun.
Li Kaishan select.ed a flat stone wall and painted a stone slab of 15 meters long and 3 meters wide with black charcoal pencils. He drilled more than 40 holes along the four edge lines of the rectangular stone. He personally added explosives to the boresight. The amount of explosives was precisely controlled, and many of them could damage the stone slabs, but they were too few to separate the stone slabs from the rock walls. After the explosives were installed, with the boring explosion of the “boom boom”, the two edges of the boulders were blown out of the cracks, and there were no traces of cracking on both sides. Chen Zhide anxiously asked: "What to do?"
"The method to put up a boring gun can only be used once, and I am afraid it will damage the stone." Li Kaishan said, "Although the other two sides of the stone were not blown out of the cracks, they were shot and then they were nailed in with steel wedges. It's much easier."
Next, the masonrymen marched together and pulled 100 steel wedges into the uncracked sides of the stone. It can take a lot of effort and the stone has no meaning to be separated from the rock. Chen Zhide was so anxious to wipe off his sweat again. Li Kaishan was also a bit downcast. Staring at the stone in front of him, he shouted loudly at the masonry workers: “Open two stone troughs along the edge of the stone and put the jacks into the stone trough. With the top force applied, I can't believe I can't peel the stone from the rock!"
It was busy for a long time and the two stone tanks were finally cut out. In the rock tank, eight jacks with a weight of 200 tons were placed in. With the continuous application of jacking force, only a few buzzing sounds were heard. The huge stone slab body was completely detached from the rock.
As soon as the initial carving of the stone pillars was completed, the construction team suddenly received notification from the Construction Committee that the entire monument should be turned 180 degrees.
After Stonestone succeeded in peeling from the rock, a bigger puzzle was placed in front of it: How to transport this huge stone to the train station?
Fushan is about 30 kilometers away from Qingdao Railway Station, and most of the roads are rolling hills. If a temporary train from a quarry to a temporary train to the station, the cost is not small. Li Kaishan finally gave a transportation method: Roller bars.
The first step is to lay a sleeper on the road surface, then put a row of logs on the sleepers, and then put the boulders on the logs. As long as the thrust is applied behind the stone, the stone will move slowly.
Chen Zhide felt that this method was feasible. After collective discussion, he finally decided that instead of logs, the first batch of seamless steel tubes produced by the Anshan Iron and Steel Plant was used for insurance purposes. When they were ready, under the traction of three imported high-powered tractors, the stone finally rolled to the foot of the mountain little by little.
